ADVANCE PRICING: $20 (+ fees) DAY OF SHOW PRICING: $25 (+ fees) Hank Heaven’s third EP, Welterweight, marks a new chapter for the New York songwriter and guitarist. Recorded at Sugar Mountain in Brooklyn with producer Phil Weinrobe (Big Thief, Billie Marten, Tomberlin) and a band including El Kempner of Palehound, Núria Graham, Sean Mullins, Mike Helderman, and Adam Brisbin, the record puts Hank’s songwriting front and center. After years spent touring as a guitarist with swing bands and working alongside artists including Samia and Del Water Gap, Hank began releasing their own music with 2022’s Call Me Hank, followed by Loaded Dice two years later. On Welterweight, Hank strips away much of the processing and electronics of their earlier work in favor of direct, largely live recordings with very few overdubs. The songs capture life and love in New York through sharp, specific details: bad landlords, bodegas, arguments, new relationships, sobriety, and the complicated process of growing up. Hank’s fingerpicked acoustic guitar and unadorned voice open “I Wanna Be Your Man,” while elsewhere they step away from the instrument entirely, letting the songs and the band take the lead. With the lyrical detail of The Mountain Goats, flashes of Bill Callahan’s wry humor, and an instinctive sense of melody, Hank has grown into a candid and confident songwriter. Welterweight finds them looking at where they’ve been while moving decisively forward, both personally and creatively, resulting in a vivid snapshot of a young artist finding their footing.
