The term "al fresco" has a lovely ring to it, which makes sense given that Italian is a Romance language. However, the definition may vary, depending on who you talk to.
The literal translation of "al fresco" means "in the cool" or "in the cold." In the U.S., we use that term to describe outdoor dining, with a refreshing breeze passing through in between bites or sips. However, the Italians use the term as slang for being "in prison." When someone is "al fresco" or "in the cool," it refers to serving time inside a concrete cell.
Regardless of what language you speak, the fact is that dining outside in Portland is simply arresting. You'll be chained to your seat while enjoying compelling meals and pristine views — not by a police interrogator. Celebrate your freedom with these tremendous outdoor dining experiences.
Roof with a view
Is there anything better than a rooftop view? It's an experience that everyone should have at least once, and Portland has a few unforgettable options.
Top of the East offers perhaps Portland's most dramatic outdoor dining experience. Perched on the 15th floor of the Westin Portland Harborview, their seasonal rooftop service provides panoramic views of Casco Bay and Back Cove. On clear days, the view even stretches out to the white peaks of New Hampshire's mountain ranges.
Located on the corner of Commercial and Center Street, Luna Rooftop Bar towers over the Old Port waterfront. From here, you can see the beautiful contrast between vibrant foot traffic on Commercial Street and slow-passing ships along Casco Bay. Luna caters to guests year-round, but seating is first-come, first-served, so get there early.
While it lacks the traditional "scenic view," Bar Publica boasts an electric atmosphere on its rooftop deck. The Puerto Rican-inspired menu, tiki bar, and festive music create a dining experience that honors Chef Ron Medlock's cultural roots and is also just downright fun.
Harborside classics
Nothing compares to dining on the waterfront. There is something for everyone, whether you're out for a classy date night or kicking off the weekend with a slice and a brew.
For a more intimate waterfront experience, Thames Landing comes to mind with its upscale menu and imaginative craft cocktails. In addition to its lavish dining room, Scales has outdoor seating on a deck, perfect for a wonderful fine-dining experience overlooking the harbor.
For casual dining, Luke's Lobster offers some of the best lobster rolls in the city. Boone's Fish House and Oyster Room boasts delicious stuffed lobster, oysters, and other seafood in a building that's been around since the late 1800s. J's Oyster Bar has a killer raw bar that pairs perfectly with the ocean breeze.
Looking for something more lively? Porthole Restaurant & Pub is a great spot for drinks, pub fare, and live music on their dance-friendly deck. Flatbread Company shares a similar vibe, but also offers tremendous wood-fired pizza. Camp Pennant has a massive dining room and bar area, but the brewery/distillery has a sneaky back deck that's perfect for grabbing a couple of pops at night when the harbor lights up.
Patios, decks, and lots
When summer dawns on Portland, you can't walk down any street without seeing a cluster of tables and chairs on the sidewalk, just waiting for guests. No matter what neighborhood you're in, there's a place to get a drink and a bite.
It would be near-impossible to list them all, but here are a couple of recommendations to get you started.
In the Old Port, Wharf Street alone has numerous spots where you can enjoy libations and take in the energy of Portland's busiest alley street, including Room for Improvement, Street and Co., Rigby Yard, and Portland Mash Tun.
On the East End, the Eastern Prom Food Truck Park reigns supreme for a fun, family-friendly picnic excursion. The ever-rotating cast of trucks includes local staples like Eighty 8 Donuts, Mr. Tuna, Vy Banh Mi, and more.
On the opposite end of town, the breweries on Industrial Way offer more than enough for an exceptionally pleasant afternoon. Battery Steele Brewing, Foundation Brewing, Definitive Brewing Company, and Allagash Brewing Company have outdoor spaces where you can see dogs, play outdoor games, and drink beer concocted from the inimitable imaginations of Portland's brewers.
