Long live the new: Rustic Overtones' Dave Gutter on the upcoming tribute celebrating the band
Portland’s music community is coming together for an evening of sonic reinvention with “Long Live the New: A Tribute to Rustic Overtones” at Live at Madrid’s. Bringing together a diverse lineup of local artists, including ENiAM, Jaylen White, Melvin Gradiz, and Primo Cubano, the showcase celebrates the legacy of one of Maine’s most enduring rock acts.
For longtime listeners, the timing coincides with a major milestone for the band, but frontman Dave Gutter wants audiences to know this is far from a standard retrospective.
“It’s a little bit confusing because we’re kind of doing the 25th anniversary around the same time as the drop of this, but so maybe some people think it’s like a reissue or anything,” Gutter said. “It’s not. It’s a complete reimagining by other artists.”
Rather than having contemporary musicians simply cover the Overtones’ signature groove-heavy, rock-meets-soul sound verbatim, Gutter pushed the performers to filter the material through their own unique lenses.
“A lot of the earlier versions were like, you know, carbon copy. They were like going by the script and doing it just the way we had done it,” Gutter said. “And I was like, no, like encourage everybody to do a wildly different take on this.”
The tribute serves as an appetizer for an even bigger weekend milestone: Rustic Overtones’ sold-out headlining performance on Saturday, Nov. 7, at Live at Madrid’s. Marking the official 25th anniversary of their landmark album, "¡Viva Nueva!," the packed room represents both a rare intimate homecoming and a cultural milestone. For a local independent act that broke major-label barriers at the turn of the millennium, commanding an immediate sellout decades later cements the band’s role as the gold standard of Maine's music identity.
For Gutter, witnessing both peers and new voices keep the catalog vital is the ultimate validation.
“The fact that a lot of the music does translate with these other artists just makes me feel like we did a good job,” Gutter said. “We worked hard at making a record that is still here and can still be relevant and appreciated 25 years later.”
Tickets for “Long Live the New: A Tribute to Rustic Overtones” are available now. And don't forget to check out this sneak peek from an upcoming video of the full interview we conducted with Gutter.
