Maine Coast Life's 2026 Guide to Maine Film Festivals
Have you ever spent your life savings on a trip to Cannes and four months worth of French lessons just to watch movies that haven’t yet been theatrically released?
We haven’t either. Why bother when some of the best independent and international productions are screened right here in Maine? Local talent, established stars, and up-and-comers bring their unique visions to the silver screen at film festivals around the Greater Portland area.
Here are some of the highlights coming up in the months ahead.

Maine International Film Festival (July 10-19)
The Maine International Film Festival runs just over a week in July, at the apex of summer. Created by the Maine Film Center in 1998, the MIFF takes over downtown Waterville to present top-notch American independent and international cinema, with a special spotlight on Maine’s finest directors.
The Tourmaline Prizes recognize the best Maine-made films of the festival. The winners are announced on closing night, with a $5,000 prize awarded to the best feature film, and a $2,500 prize for the best short film.
The festival offers multiple packages, with options for a 10-ticket bundle or a full-festival pass.

Maine Outdoor Film Festival (July 22-26)
Born from the popular local magazine, “No Umbrella - A Reader for River People,” Nick Callanan revised his presentation of epic outdoor adventures in 2012 by hosting a series of films rooted in the great outdoors. The Maine Outdoor Film Festival (MOFF) has hosted its flagship event in Portland every July for the past 14 years.
The festival features films by local Maine artists and international directors across a handful of venues around Portland. The organizers also host panel discussions, networking events, and parties to expand the viewing experience.
After the main festival, the MOFF goes on the road, bringing a curated collection of films to other venues across the coast. If you miss the flagship event, be sure to check out MOFF’s tour dates to find them at a venue near you.
Vacationland Film Festival (August 21-23)
At the tail end of the summer, the Vacationland Film Festival hosts a weekend-long showcase of local filmmaking in Biddeford, about 18 miles south of Portland. With City Theater and the Maine Film Community acting as partners, the event is focused on Maine-friendly films.
The festival also hosts “Will’s Prize,” a youth filmmaking award in memory of Willem Holden Watkinson, who passed away unexpectedly in 2024 when he was only 19 years old. Watkinson was a budding young filmmaker who created “April in Maine,” which won the youth competition at the 2025 Vacationland Film Festival. The prize is awarded by a jury of filmmaking professionals, who evaluate short documentary or narrative features created by directors 18 years old or younger.

Camden International Film Festival (September 17-20)
Documentary fanatics will find home in the Camden International Film Festival, an event dedicated to promoting the next generation of visual storytellers in the nonfiction genre. Established in 2005 by the Points North Institute, CIFF has screened over 1,000 documentaries and immersive experiences from all over the world, showcasing work at venues in Camden, Rockport, and Rockland.
The festival recognizes select films through several different awards and fellowships: The Diane Weyermann Fellowship and Memorial Fund recognizes documentaries that, according to CIFF, “take artistic risks in highlighting stories of moral and ethical urgency”; the Harrell Award spotlights the most significant documentaries of the year, with unique and powerful directorial vision; the Cinematic Vision Award encourages bold, courageous cinematic practices to reshape the definition of nonfiction; the Fowlie Award is the festival’s audience choice award; and the Short Film Award celebrates artists who can make big statements in small timeframes.
