Maine Coast Life's guide to the Maine Lobster Festival

Every summer, thousands of visitors from all over the world make their way to Rockland to celebrate the Maine Lobster Festival, one of New England's most beloved traditions. Celebrating its 79th year in 2026, the festival returns July 29-Aug. 2 with five days of fresh lobster, live entertainment, family fun, and an authentic Maine experience. Best of all, admission is free, making it one of Maine's premier summer events.
It's not only an event that opens up to those of us lucky to live here, but also attracts visitors and volunteers from all over the world. According to Shannon Kinney, the Director of Marketing for the Lobster Festival, the event generates millions of dollars in tourism-based spending for the surrounding towns.
"It is a huge boon to the economic development in Maine," Kinney added.
Over the next few weeks, Maine Coast Life will build a comprehensive travel guide to help visitors make the most of the Maine Lobster Festival. Before planning your itinerary, here's an introduction to some of the festival's must-see events and activities.
Fresh hot Maine lobster
Let's start where every visit should: lobster, lobster, and more lobster.
The festival serves an impressive selection of lobster dishes, giving visitors plenty of ways to enjoy Maine's signature seafood. Choose from a single, twin, or triple lobster dinner featuring freshly steamed lobster served with sweet Maine corn on the cob and hot melted butter. The dining tent also offers seafood chowder, traditional New England clam chowder, and fish chowder.
If you're looking to branch out, try lobster bisque, lobster mac and cheese, lobster Caesar wraps, or fresh lobster salad.
Running out of lobster is hardly a concern. Head lobster cooker Vern Mossman prepares approximately 20,000 pounds of lobster during each festival.
The Maine Lobster Festival Seafood Cooking Contest
Lobster always looks incredible on the plate, but watching talented chefs create those dishes is part of the fun.
During the Seafood Cooking Contest, chefs showcase their creativity while competing for cash prizes. Contestants from across the country prepare original seafood recipes, which are judged on creativity, simplicity, and effective use of seafood as the featured ingredient.
After the awards ceremony, spectators can sample the dishes and take home copies of the winning recipes. Applications remain open through Wednesday, July 15.
The International Great Crate Race
The International Great Crate Race remains one of the festival's signature traditions. As one of the pioneers who helped test the efficacy of this competition, Kinney said the idea for the crate race started when "Bill Atwood and his then wife Diane put a bunch of us kids out in the harbor and tried all these different methodologies to see if we could run on the crates." From there, the competition evolved from a simple question of "what-if?" to an event that's been covered by ESPN.
The course consists of 50 wooden lobster crates floating across Rockland's inner harbor. Contestants sprint across the crates, relying on speed and balance to stay above the water. They continue running back and forth until they inevitably lose their footing and splash into the harbor.
In 2014, Scarlett Flint of Warren, Maine, and Harrison Page of South Berwick, Maine, set the event record. The contestants, both under 10 years old, tied each other, each crossing 6,500 crates before falling into the water.
Annual Steins & Vines Tasting event
Lobster may be the main attraction, but Maine's craft beverage scene is equally impressive.
The annual Steins & Vines Tasting showcases breweries, wineries, cideries, and distilleries from across the state. Previous participants have included:

On Friday and Saturday, July 31 and Aug. 1, festival-goers can enjoy tasting sessions from 2:30-4 p.m. or 4:30-6 p.m. in the entertainment tent.
Tickets are $50 and include 12 tastings, a commemorative tasting glass, and light snacks.
Other festival highlights
The festival entertainment is not limited to food and beverages.
Watch The Big Parade make its way through downtown Rockland; enjoy live performances by local favorites like Rigometrics, Tyler Healy, and the Rocky Coast String Band; or browse dozens of arts and crafts vendors showcasing the work of talented Maine artists and artisans.
Additional events include the Maine Lobster Festival Dog Show, the Little Lobster Diaper Derby, the 10K Road Race and 5K Fun Run, along with many other family-friendly activities throughout the five-day festival.
